Summer Camp River Rafting

Registration for Summer Camps is Now Open!

Our Summer Camps are categorized by age range: 5 year-olds, 6-7 year-olds, 8-11 year-olds and 11-15 year-olds. 

Camps are either one week or two weeks long. Descriptions, dates, times and fees will be listed under each weekly camp title. Please refer to the right column for info on how to register.

Don't forget: Nature Center members receive a discount on camps! Not a member yet? Join today to take advantage of lower prices and other valuable benefits. (Must join at Poppy level or above.)

Cancellation/Refund Policy: A cancellation fee of 10% will apply to all cancellations made more than 14 days before the start of a camp. No refunds will be given if cancellation is 14 days or less before the camp. A rescheduling fee of $10 will apply for each class change requested. Twenty-four hour notice is required.

Summer Camps for Ages 5

Camp 5

This camp is full.

Monday through Friday. July 8-12. Five comes alive in this week-long summer camp at Effie Yeaw. Your child will spend the week learning about five wonderful basics of nature - animals, plants, water, earth, and sky. How are they connected and how do we fit in? Campers will enjoy hiking, a real science experiment, arts and crafts, games, and singing with rhythm instruments.

Cost: $140 members / $165 non-members  


Summer Camps for Ages 6 - 7

Cozy Little Habitats

Monday through Friday. June 24-28--There are so many amazing animals in the Sacramento area, but where do they all live? Join us for a week of exploration this summer as we study the many different types of habitats that many local animals call home. Discover the wonders of the oak woodland as we hike through the Nature Preserve, have fun with activities and crafts, and learn how these critters learn and maintain their homes!

Young Botanists

Monday through Friday. July 8-12--Come grow with us on a fun adventure identifying native plants around the Nature Preserve! Learn what makes plants super important and how they adapt to their environment. Discover the amazing world of pollinators and how they help our ecosystems as we hike through the preserve in search of them. Through hands-on activities and experiments, you can become a plant pro!

Coyote Kids

Monday through Friday. July 15-19--Can you howl like a coyote or walk like a fox? It’s summer and the preserve’s oak forest is bustling with life. Join us for a week of channeling your inner wild animal as we tiptoe through the trails in search of animals in hiding and amazing plants. Explore how animals move and live as you learn to expand your senses, read nature clues, and discover the wonderful wilds of coyote’s home. 


This camp includes at least one off-site camp day.

Awesome Amphibians

Monday through Friday. July 22-26--Ever wondered about frogs, toads, salamanders and newts? What do they eat? Where do they live? Why are they so alien looking? Come discover the answers to this questions and so much more in our Amazing Amphibians summer camp. We will be exploring their habitats, learning about their life cycles, and working with some truly awesome creatures.

Fin-tastic Scouts

Monday through Friday. July 29-August 2--There’s something fishy going on by the river and pond! Explore the many wonders of water and discover the critters that live in it. Scoop for live aquatic creatures, test the quality of various bodies of water, and learn how to protect these ecosystems! Join us as we explore aquatic life through interactive activities, games, and crafts.

Two Week Camp: Monday through Friday. July 8 - July 19--Our most popular camp fills quickly! Ready for an adventure? Then prepare to be outdoors and let the fun begin! You will spend two weeks enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, crafts, games, a night hike, and river rafting! Don’t miss out on the adventures you can have on the American River this summer!

Amazing Adaptations

Monday through Friday. July 22-26--How does a tadpole become a frog? How do salmon transition from freshwater to saltwater? Why do hawks and falcons have such wonderful eyesight? This week, learn about amazing animal adaptations and how these adaptations allow them to survive in their habitat. Hike through the Nature Preserve in search of animals and learn about their many adaptations. Through crafts, activities, and games, you’ll become an animal expert!

Water Wizards, Ages 8-11

Monday through Friday. July 29-August 2. Discover the magic of the American River! We will explore Ancil Hoffman Park and William B. Pond Recreation Area to find the many creatures that rely on the river for habitat. Stay cool with us this week as we wade into the shallows, examine aquatic life and have plenty of fun with water!

Summer Camps for Ages 12 - 15

Junior Naturalists

Times:9:00am to 12:00pm

This camp is full.

Monday through Wednesday. July 1-3--If you have a love of nature and all its inhabitants, perhaps you are a budding Naturalist. Join us for three days of exploration as we learn about the animals and habitats in our area, take a kayaking trip to explore the water, learn some wilderness survival skills, and develop a respect of all things in nature. 


Kayaking fee included in price.
