NISENAN MAIDU SUMMER VILLAGE
The Nisenan Maidu people had a
flourishing culture along the American River before the arrival of
European settlers. The bountiful environment provided for all of their
needs, and their environmental ethic and spirituality allowed them to
live in harmony with their environment.
Travel back in time by strolling
through the replica Nisenan summer village complete with tule shelter,
grinding rock, acorn granary, fire pit and shade shelter. Constructed as
part of the Nature Center's Maidu Cultural Heritage Program, the
village has information plaques that describe the traditional names,
construction and uses of the structures.
